Today, the U.S. Supreme Court agreed to hear Edith “Edie” Windsor’s challenge to the constitutionality of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA). Windsor is represented by attorneys from Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison LLP; the American Civil Liberties Union; the New York Civil Liberties Union and the Stanford Law School Supreme Court Litigation Clinic.

DOMA requires the federal government to discriminate against same-sex couples who are legally married, and in less than a month that will include couples from Maine. All loving committed couples deserve the freedom to marry, and to have that marriage recognized. Edie Windsor and Thea Spyer built a life together for more than forty years, but the federal government treats them like strangers. It is time for the Supreme Court to strike down DOMA once and for all.
