Birthright Class Action Ruling from the Bench
Federal Court Blocks Trump Birthright Citizenship Order and Certifies Nationwide Class Protecting All Impacted Families

On Thursday morning, a federal court in New Hampshire blocked President Trump’s executive order restricting birthright citizenship and certified a nationwide class to protect the citizenship rights of all children born on U.S. soil.

The ACLU of Maine, along with several partner organizations, brought the challenge in the wake of the Supreme Court’s decision in Trump v. CASA, which directed courts to narrow the nationwide protections that had been provided in the first round of challenges to Trump’s birthright citizenship ban.

The court's decision is a huge victory in the fight to protect the citizenship of children born in the United States, and is a powerful affirmation of the 14th Amendment.

Also on Thursday, a few members of our team stopped by Bev's Cafe in Kennebunk to chat with community members. Our executive director, Molly Curren Rowles, and engagement and education coordinator, Aaron Rosenblum, had a wonderful time meeting with the community as they stopped in to grab breakfast.

We hope to do many more events like this in the future in a town near you! Stay up-to-date on events here, or sign up for occasional email updates from the ACLU of Maine.
