Why did you want to be an ACLU of Maine intern?
I have long been inspired by great civil rights activists and attorneys — Reverend Dr. Pauli Murray and Ruth Bader Ginsburg among them. This inspiration led me to begin volunteering with the ACLU of Maine in 2018. Now, as a law student, I remain passionate about civil rights, including immigrants’ rights, racial justice, and reproductive freedom. I wanted to intern with the ACLU of Maine to learn how lawyers and policy advocates combat civil rights injustice.
What are you excited to learn during your internship?
Thanks to the ACLU of Maine’s incredible legal team, I have already learned so much during my internship. For example, I’ve gained a deeper understanding of social impact litigation. I’ve also had the opportunity to research a diverse array of constitutional law issues and I’ve gained exposure to legislative/policy work. I hope to continue learning throughout the final weeks of my internship!
Where are you now, and what are your plans for the future?
I am a third-year law student at the University of Maine School of Law. One day, I hope to be a legislative lawyer. I am particularly interested in mitigating systemic injustice in the U.S. immigration system and working with communities to advocate for better policy.
