Like most Americans, I depend on earning a living wage to support myself. I pay a mortgage and student loans and other bills. If the check I received from my employer was somehow not a fair wage due to the fact that I am a woman, how would I know? What would I do? What if the wage disparity negatively impacted my ability to be financially stable or plan for retirement?

In 6 out of 10 American families, women are the primary breadwinners. That's why the Paycheck Fairness Act, being reintroduced in Congress, is so important. The bill would update the Equal Pay Act of 1963. When President Kennedy signed the bill into law, he affirmed our nation's commitment to assuring equal pay for equal work. But today, almost 50 years later, women are still only making 77 cents for every dollar a man in our country earns. We want the Equal Pay Act to fulfill its promise, which is why we need the Paycheck Fairness Act.
