A number of years ago, I believe it was 1998, Fox rolled out a "reality" television series titled World's Wildest Police Videos. The show was staggeringly simplistic and unabashedly authoritarian. Many of the videos originated from news helicopters or dashboard cameras in police cruisers and featured police dealing with car chases, robberies, traffic stops, protesters, etc.
While the videos were mildly interesting, the narrative was truly frightening: Cops are always good, everyone against them is bad.
I'm remembering this show after watching three police videos that have made national headlines this year. The incidents took place as far back as 2007, but were recently released to the media because of pending lawsuits.
The force used is staggering. All the victims are African-American.
To say the obvious, we have a long way to go to remedy police abuse.
I encourage everyone to read about what the ACLU is doing to bring effective and humane law enforcement to communities across the nation.
