As a former servicemember, and a woman, I am deeply disturbed by the decision of the United States Congress to continue the ban on military abortions for those who are victims of rape and incest.  Our women in uniform deserve the opportunity to make the decision that is best for themselves and their families when facing an unintended (and likely devastating) pregnancy. For those women on Medicaid, and others who receive federal medical benefits, abortion is covered in these extreme circumstances – It simply does not make any sense to single out and deny these services to females in the military.

Making this decision even more shocking is the evidence that rape is not such a rare occurance. According to a 2003 study by the University of Iowa, a striking thirty percent of women in the military reported being raped.

"I think it's outrageous that we have young women who are serving our country and sacrificing their lives, and if they are raped and a pregnancy happens then they cannot utilize federal resources in order to have an abortion," Rep. Davis told HuffPost. "How can we tell a servicewoman that we would provide funding for her if she were sitting in a safe office in Washington, DC, but because she's fighting for our freedom in Afghanistan we tell her no? It's just not acceptable."
