Yesterday was Women's Day at the State House and the ACLU of Maine was present and accounted for! We are part of the Maine Coaliton for Women, a group of organizations that advocate together for legislative and policy changes that will better the lives of Maine women and girls.

Shenna spoke to the group assembled in the Hall of Flags about expanding voting rights. While not just an issue that impacts women, increasing access to voting will help older women, working women and women who are helping to raise a family.

My favorite part of Shenna's speech was when she reflected on our shared history as women. Once upon a time, women were struggling to gain the right to vote, period. Now, women vote for women who have the right to run for and serve in office!

One of those women, Senator Linda Valentino attended the event and later in the day sat down to talk to our lobby team about our priorities for this session. Senator Valentino shares our commitment to reproductive freedom, among other things. We're excited to work with her and many others this session, like Senator Troy Jackson. I'm pictured with both senators below, in the Hall of Flags.

I hope you'll join us next Wednesday, January 23rd at the State House for a celebration of the 40th Anniversary of Roe v Wade. There's a speaking program that begins at 10:00 a.m. I'm excited to reflect on another important advancement for all women at this event.
