I am a  proud card carrying member of the American Civil Liberties Union.  Last year we celebrated 90 years of defending the Constitution and the Bill of Rights.  Over those 90 years, the ACLU has been involved in more cases before the United States Supreme Court than anyone except the United States government.  And those cases including victories like Loving v. Virginia and Gideon v. Wainwright as well as some of our important losses like the Scopes evolution trial and Korematsu v. United States have made history.

In 1968, a small group of visionaries created the official Maine affiliate of the American Civil Liberties Union.  Louis Scolnik became our first President.  Our affiliate has advanced and defended civil liberties and civil rights in Maine for over forty years.  We are proud of that history too.

Today, the Maine Civil Liberties Union announces that we have changed our name to reflect our affiliation with a national network of dedicated civil libertarians in every state in the country and Washington, DC and Puerto Rico.  Together, we work every day to bring meaning to the Constitution and the Bill of Rights.  Join us at www.aclumaine.org/join.  The name change reflects what has always been the case: all of our members are members of both the national ACLU and the state affiliate.
