I attended a beautiful wedding over the weekend with my partner. We were both thrilled for the couple and honored to be part of their celebration. As the ceremony wrapped up and we made our way to the reception, I started to think about our future wedding - what we will wear, what food we will serve and what song we will dance to for our first dance.

Mostly, I thought about how personal our wedding will be. We will want our families and closest friends to approve of our union and be present on our special day. We will exchange vows according to our faith traditions and publicly affirm our commitment to one another.

Last week, as I stood on the steps of Portland City Hall for the launch of the Yes on One campaign, I was moved to tears by the outpouring of support for same-sex marriage. Almost 300 people, most of them strangers to me, gathered to support the freedom to marry for all Mainers.

I am struck by the idea that I will need the support of thousands of voters this November before I can sign my name next to my partner's on a civil marriage license. Literally, I need to ask your permission to marry the person I love. I need you to agree to allow me to make one of the most important decisions of my life.

What do you say?

I know we may not know each other, but your support means a lot to me. I would like you to vote Yes on One, but even more than that, I'd like you to volunteer to help us win.

Winning this election will take all of us and the time is now to sign up to make calls or knock on doors. Sign up to volunteer here
