This afternoon we stood on the steps of Portland City Hall along with hundreds of other supporters for the "YES on 1" campaign's kickoff rally. It was a glorious day and the energy from the crowd couldn't have been better. With Election Day looming less than two months away, we're on the cusp of making history in Maine as the first state to proactively win the freedom to marry via the ballot box.

If you want to volunteer with the campaign to help ensure this historic victory, please visit MainersUnited.org for more information, or contact our Marriage Project Coordinator Jill Barkley at jbarkley@aclumaine.org.

Here are a few photos from the rally:

A big crowd was on hand for the mid-day rally, which took place on the steps of Portland City Hall.

Portland Mayor Michael Brennan spoke to the crowd, flanked by City Councilors Nick Mavodones and Dave Marshall.

A beautiful day brought nearly 500 people to the rally.

Many speakers spoke about their spiritual beliefs guiding them towards support of marriage for same-sex couples, with an emphasis on how Question 1 protects religious freedom.
