Scott Dolan

Name: Scott Dolan
Pronouns: He/Him/His
Year of Participation: Summer 2017

What was the most valuable thing you learned or accomplished in the program?
Since I did my internship after only my first year in law school, I was still pretty green to what the practice of law would look like. But the ACLU of Maine gave me and one other intern the opportunity to work on a cutting edge First Amendment case that involved the then-sitting governor of Maine who was blocking people from his official Facebook page. We interviewed some of the people who had been blocked, drafted a demand letter, and prepared the complaint that was ultimately filed in the lawsuit. As a newbie to the field of law, that experience was my introduction to impact litigation. I learned so much and got to work with many great people.

What have you done since being involved in the ACLU program?
Before graduating from University of Maine School of Law, I went on to intern as a student attorney at the Cumberland Legal Aid Clinic and then as an extern on a special project for U.S. District Court Judge Nancy Torresen. After graduating from law school in 2019, I passed the bar exam and began work as an attorney at the firm MittelAsen in Portland.

What are your plans for the future?
I plan to continue practicing law and honing my skills as an attorney at MittelAsen. My practice areas include civil litigation, business law, and intellectual property law. I also have my hands full at the moment, raising three kids with my wife Cara.
