Deputy Director
Ariel Kernis is the Deputy Director at the ACLU of Maine where she leads the organization’s operations, compliance, capacity building, and engagement efforts, including electoral initiatives. She supports individuals and teams with compassion and humor to increase organizational effectiveness and grow the ACLU’s work in Maine. 
 
Ariel joined the organization with 20 years of experience across public, private, and nonprofit sectors in law, management, organizational development, and politics. Her background includes time as a commercial litigator, legal director, political consultant, and business owner. 
 
Ariel is a graduate of Bryn Mawr College and the University of Chicago Law School. She clerked for U.S. District Court Judge Robert Pratt, S.D. Iowa. Fun fact: one of her first jobs after college was with the ACLU of Pennsylvania.
