WHAT:
Groups representing a class of all babies who would be subject to President Trump’s executive order that seeks to restrict birthright citizenship will brief reporters ahead of next week’s Supreme Court arguments in the case, Trump v. Barbara.

The Barbara case is a nationwide class action brought by the ACLU of Maine, ACLU Immigrants’ Rights Project, ACLU of New Hampshire, ACLU of Massachusetts, Legal Defense Fund, Asian Law Caucus, and Democracy Defenders Fund.

Courts have repeatedly blocked the Trump administration from implementing the executive order, finding it violates the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, over a century of Supreme Court precedent, and a longstanding federal law.

The Supreme Court will hear arguments on April 1 at 9 a.m. ACLU National Legal Director Cecellia Wang will argue for the ACLU and others challenging the executive order.

SPEAKERS:

  • Cody Wofsy, Deputy Director, ACLU Immigrants’ Rights Project
  • Aarti Kohli, Executive Director, Asian Law Caucus
  • Morenike Fajana, Senior Legal Counsel, Legal Defense Fund
  • Taryn Wilgus Null, Senior Counsel, Democracy Defenders Fund

Defending Birthright Citizenship at the Supreme Court

President Trump has targeted immigrants since his first day in office, and his efforts to eliminate birthright citizenship are at the center of his cruel agenda to redefine who gets to be an American. But the 14th Amendment guarantees citizenship to children born in the United States — and President Trump is not above the Constitution.
