A Second Chance for Separated Families

The fight over the asylum rights of families who had been separated by the Trump administration took what could be a critical turn late last night. Following weeks of negotiation, parties in three lawsuits — including the ACLU’s class-action lawsuit, which first blocked the family separation policy and forced the government to reunite families — brokered an agreement that, if approved by the judge, will allow hundreds of parents to re-apply again for asylum in the U.S. after being turned down previously.

Federal Immigration Authorities Are Running Amok Across Maine and Its Coastline

Customs and Border Protection is making news again for its aggressive immigration enforcement — this time, questioning Canadian fishing vessels in disputed international waters. According to a CBP spokesperson, the agency has questioned 21 Canadian vessels since October 2017, plus an unknown number of American vessels (mostly Maine fishermen) in the same area. Although CBP claims that these operations fall within its immigration enforcement authority, nobody should be surprised to learn that targeting these fishing boats has yielded no immigration arrests.

Interrogation on the Bus

On January 19, Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents boarded a bus in Florida and, questioned passengers about their citizenship, and removed a woman who had just been to meet her baby granddaughter for the first time. That woman's fate remains unclear; her family has not heard from her since, and fear she is in immigration detention.
