HOW THE OFFICES ON YOUR BALLOT AFFECT IMMIGRANTS’ RIGHTS

The fundamental constitutional protections of due process and equal protection embodied in our Constitution and Bill of Rights apply to every person, regardless of immigration status. The offices on your ballot can help ensure the Constitution’s promise is realized.

State Legislators

State legislators passed three ICE Out of Maine laws to limit federal abuses of power. The Legislature can also pass new bills that hold federal agents accountable for violating Maine people’s rights, and create a pathway for Mainers to sue when their rights are violated.

The Governor

Governors can help defend immigrant communities in their states by limiting state agencies’ collaboration with ICE, protecting government spaces from agents’ access without a warrant, and expanding legal services and information sharing with impacted families.

Attorney General

Maine is the only state where the attorney general is elected by the state legislature. The attorney general can challenge federal anti-immigrant policies in court, advise state and local law enforcement on complying with Maine’s new ICE Out laws, and help communities understand their rights and access available services.
