In a victory for parents and children with disabilities, Maine’s highest court reversed a decision that punished a family for the state’s own failure to provide home nursing services for a child.

We filed friend-of-the-court briefs supporting Maine Beacon reporter Dan Neumann. In a victory for journalists’ First Amendment rights, the First Circuit dismissed defamation claims filed by Cheng and Epoch Group.

About 50 incarcerated workers in the state's work release program brought this lawsuit against the State for seizing their unemployment benefits without due process. The settlement returns their benefits and recognizes a protected property interest in incarcerated individuals' prison accounts.

In October 2021, we filed an amicus brief in the Supreme Court of the United States arguing that a Maine law prohibiting the use of taxpayer funding for religious instruction at religious schools was constitutional. For the first time, the Court explicitly required taxpayers to support religious education.

In this case, the ACLU is supporting Damon Fagan, a victim of racial profiling. We argue the District Court of Maine erred when it didn’t take into account Trooper Darcy’s pattern of racial profiling when assessing the credibility of his testimony.
