Maine has proudly stood by its values of inclusion, opportunity, and equality for years, and we must continue to do so. In June of 2026, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that states can ban trans athletes from participating in sports – but that does not change anything here in Maine.
However, with this latest ruling, it is now more important than ever that Maine law continues to protect transgender students and all other people from discrimination based on their gender identity.
These provisions of the Maine Human Rights Act apply to all public schools, any private schools that are approved to receive public funds for tuition purposes, and all public post-secondary institutions in Maine.
