Augusta – Bipartisan legislators and privacy advocates will speak in support of LD 946, “An Act to Protect the Privacy of Online Customer Information,” at a press conference on Wednesday, April 24 at 10:00 a.m. at the State House Welcome Center. The Committee on Energy, Utilities and Technology will hold a public hearing on the bill at 1:00 p.m. that day.
Internet service providers (ISPs) have access to some of their customers’ most personal information, including every website they visit, the times they log into and out of their accounts, and even some location data. LD 946 (Sen. Shenna Bellows, D-Kennebec) would put urgently needed protections in place, requiring ISPs that do business in Maine to get their customers’ permission before selling this information to third parties like advertisers and insurance companies.
