Friday brought a gorgeous day and a victory at the State House. The Senate approved a positive amendment to LD 1536 . Favorite quote of the day - Senator Troy Jackson on the floor of the Senate, discussing why he believes that the Constitution always trumps: "Now I'm not a lawyer, but I've read the Constitution, and I don't remember seeing at the bottom, 'If this gets too hard, just disregard all of the above.'"

The amendment to “An Act to Amend the Standards by Which Game Wardens May Stop All-Terrain Vehicles When Operating on Private Property" retains Fourth Amendment privacy protections, while respecting the rights of private property owners.

Also - There is also a great new piece from National Geographic on the issue of solitary confinement of prisoners.

A couple of poignant quotes from the piece about the effects of subjecting prisoners to solitary confinement/segregation -

  • “The brain processes loneliness in the same area as physical pain. Being cut off from others can hurt so much, that people will go to extremes in order to connect.”
  • “Being in segregation is like torture. I’m not afraid to say that sometimes, I just fragment and cry, you know? It just hurts.”
