A local Portland bar has been ordered by the city to install surveillance cameras to monitor the bar and its surrounding sidewalks. Here's what the ACLU of MAINE had to say:
"Video cameras are becoming a more widespread feature of American life, and this is troubling in a democratic society," said Shenna Bellows, executive director of the ACLU of MAINE.
Requiring a property owner to install cameras, "the city appears to be getting around the political problem of government surveillance," she said.
Let's not sacrifice liberty for perceived security. I regularly walk by the area on the way from our office to the post office. I'd prefer not to worry about being on camera along the way!
