I am an Army veteran and I support the repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell. I have contacted my Senators and I hope you do too!

The military teaches you about being a part of a team, working together, and having complete trust in those around you; a trust that can mean life or death. Asking members of a team to conceal a major truth about themselves does significant damage to that important unit cohesion.

Additionally, there are far too many highly-skilled service members are being discharged for being homosexual that have enlisted in mission critical occupations. To lose linguists, engineers, and medics that are voluntarily serving their country is inexcusable. The United States is involved in too many locations abroad and is spread too thinly to turn away highly-qualified men and women for important positions based solely on their sexuality.

The Senate is voting this week on whether or not to repeal this discriminatory policy within the armed services and it is of vital importance that we all encourage them to do so. I served beside a number of gay and lesbian service members and their dedication to the mission, to their unit, and to their country was unmatched. According to data by the Service Members Legal Defense Network there are more than a million gay veterans and 66,000 that are currently serving at home and overseas. What a travesty to lose them from our military, especially during a time of war.

Please urge Senator Collins (207-780-3575) and Senator Snowe (207-874-0883) with a phone call or an email. Tell them that you are a constituent and ask them to repeal Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell and vote for equality within our armed services. Let’s put an end to this discriminatory, counter-productive policy.

And for anyone in the Portland area this afternoon, join us in Deering Oaks Park along with Lady Gaga to rally against Don't Ask, Don't Tell!
