Big, Gay, and Totally (Il)legal
Here in Maine, any loving couple that wants to get married can do so. But in most states around the country, that’s still not the case. The ACLU wants to highlight this unfair patchwork of state marriage laws, and so we’re doing the most fitting thing: we’re throwing some big, gay (il)legal weddings!

Religious Exemption Bill Would Allow Discrimination
Freedom of religion is a fundamental right, one the ACLU will always fight for. It is protected by the constitutions of Maine and the United States. The Maine Human Rights Act explicitly protects people against discrimination based on their religion. And there are 13 individual statutes in Maine law that protect religious freedom.

Happy Anniversary!
This article first appeared in our Winter 2013 newsletter. We are running it here to celebrate one year since marriage equality became the law in Maine, and to celebrate the first anniversary of the first couples to get married under the new law as well as all those who have married since. 2014 Session Preview
The Maine State Legislature is gearing up for the 2014 short session - and so are we! We are closely watching any bills that threaten or promote civil liberties. While we haven't taken an official position on any bills yet, here's a list of some bills that we're following:
