Florida is currently poised to pass an invasive anti-abortion legislation similar to that passed recently in Oklahoma (see my recent blog post).

The bill contains two anti-abortion amendments that would dramatically impact the health of Florida women and undermine women's rights.

The legislation would put government in the exam room, requiring physicians—before providing an abortion in the first trimester—to perform an ultrasound and show it to the woman or describe the image. The legislation also dictates to private companies what insurance they may provide to their employees.

On Monday, June 7th, the bill (HB 1143) hit Governor Crist's desk—giving him 15 days to sign or veto the legislation. All the major editorial boards have urged a veto, and Governor Crist has indicated in public statements that he is leaning toward a veto.

This attack on women's rights—and the ACLU's overwhelming response—shows how important it is for us to stay on top of legislation that tries to chip away at Roe v. Wade.

Take action:
If you have friends or family in Florida, ask them to contact Governor Crist. We must not lose momentum in our efforts to defeat this harmful bill. Please tell Governor Crist to VETO HB 1143. You can e-mail the Governor or call his office at (850) 488-4441 or (850) 488-7146.
