I was one of the thousands in the
audience at the Augusta Civic Center last Spring when Phillip Spooner got up to
give public testimony in support of LD 1020, “An Act to End Discrimination in
Civil Marriage and Affirm Religious Freedom”. He brought everyone to their feet
and many to tears. Mr. Spooner is a Mainer, a life-long Republican, a veteran of World War
II, and the father of four sons—one of whom is gay. We are nearly at the end of
the campaign to defend this law at the ballot box, and on November 3 the people
of Maine will decide the
law’s fate. Looking back over the months of speeches, debates, editorials, and
television ads that have been produced to defend this law, Mr. Spooner’s 3 minutes of testimony sums up the essence
of what this law, and this campaign, is all about—“everybody is supposed to be
equal in this country.” Watch this ad, and then consider giving some of your
time and energy to help with the last week of the campaign.
