Following a screening of "The Librarians," a new documentary about the library workers fighting back against a rising tide of book bans, ACLU of Maine Chief Counsel Zach Heiden will join a panel discussion on our First Amendment right to access information.

The rate of book banning has skyrocketed since 2023. The Librarians movie highlights several librarians who were fired for refusing to remove books from shelves — or sometimes for merely asking questions about the directive to do so. Texas lawmakers created a list of 850 books around race and LGBTQ+ themes to be removed from school libraries. States such as Florida, New Jersey, and Louisiana followed suit.

​This is a story about the fight against censorship and the forces that try to remove books from the hands and minds of people.
