LD 1610: "An Act to Protect Privacy of Online Customer Personal Information"

This bill prohibits companies that provide broadband internet service in Maine from selling or otherwise sharing customers’ personal information except in limited circumstances or with the customer’s express consent. It requires internet providers to take reasonable measures to protect customers’ personal information from unauthorized access.

TAKE ACTION: contact your legislators and tell them to vote YES on LD 1610.

Talking points:

  • Using the Internet is no longer just a luxury that we can opt out of – it’s a necessity for everything from work to school to paying bills. No one should have to choose between using the Internet and protecting their privacy.
  • Our internet providers know more about us than most of our friends and family. This information should not be for sale to the highest bidder.
  • Unfortunately, federal lawmakers have always put corporate profits over consumer privacy. Now it’s up to the states to protect their residents.
