I remember waking up the day after election day in November of 2009. It was sunny and clear, but I was heavy hearted. We had lost the referendum vote to keep the bill in place that would have allowed same-sex couples to obtain civil marriage licenses in Maine.
I was a volunteer during the legislative session when our lawmakers debated and voted on the bill. I'll never forget the day our Governor signed the bill into law, it was a huge victory, but I knew we couldn't celebrate for long. I knew the bill would go out to a referendum vote. I volunteered many hours on the No on One campaign, while working full time and finishing up graduate school. I'll be honest, it was exhausting.
Fall is here, the days are shorter and I know I'm not alone in wanting to stay cozy inside of my home on rainy Saturdays or chilly Sundays, watching football. When I feel that way, I think about November 7th, the day after this year's election. I want to wake up on that day exhausted from working so hard and staying up late having celebrated the freedom to marry for all Maine couples.
There are numbers to dial and doors to knock on all over the state. What are you waiting for? Can you give just 3 hours of your time to help us all wake up happy on November 7th?
