New Year's Eve is my favorite holiday and not because of any parties. I delight in reflecting on the year that has passed and making resolutions for the year ahead. This New Year, I feel an immense gratitude to be working for an organization that defends civil rights and civil liberties for everyone in this state. Here are 10 reasons I am giving to the ACLU of MAINE this year and why I think you should too.
1. We believe that separation of church and state is the best way to protect religious liberty.
2. We defend freedom of speech, even for those with whom we disagree.
3. We hand out copies of the United States Constitution to hundreds of schoolchildren across the state and help them understand what it means to them.
4. We advocate for human rights and due process in Maine’s prison and jails.
5. We work tirelessly toward equality for all people.
6. We are present every day of the Maine State Legislature advocating for the Constitution and the Bill of Rights.
7. We change policy and protect people.
8. We are principled.
9. When all else fails, we sue, and we win.
10. Freedom can’t protect itself.
These are ten of my reasons for giving. Make your own list, and give $10, $50, or $100 today to defend the Constitution and the Bill of Rights.
Happy New Year!
