On Wednesday afternoon, I attended the public hearing for LD 1611, the bill that will limit solitary confinement in Maine prisons. For nine hours, the Criminal Justice Committee heard from both sides about the bill. Proponents included advocates, clergy, activists, affected constituents, former prisoners. family of former and current prisoners, medical professionals, psychologists and many more. MPBN had a great story this week that summarizes many of the voices that were present at the hearing. You can listen to the story here.
I've heard from many people since Wednesday with their reflections on the hearing. The most consistent message I've received in my inbox is that the hearing was historic, and many people feel empowered now that they've had the opportunity to give voice to their experiences - to bring light to darkness.
It's been an honor to work on this bill so far. It would be great if you could join in - the more voices, the louder we are. Join us at the People of Conscience Day of Action on Tuesday, February 23rd. We will begin at the State House at 9am with a speech from the Reverend Rich Killmer, Executive Director of the National Religious Campaign Against Torture. We will briefly discuss the bill and its status and then head out into the State House to talk to legislators.
