Join us for a virtual press briefing on our lawsuit against Trump's attempt to end birthright citizenship – a constitutional guarantee in the 14th Amendment.

Following a lawsuit from the ACLU of Maine and other immigrants’ rights groups, the American Civil Liberties Union will host a virtual press briefing on Tuesday, January 21, at 2:30 p.m. ET alongside Make the Road New York, LULAC, the Haitian Bridge Alliance, State Democracy Defenders Fund, Legal Defense Fund, and the Asian Law Caucus following President Trump’s executive order on birthright citizenship.

Hours after taking office, President Trump signed an executive order titled “Protecting the Meaning and Value of American Citizenship,” which mandates that federal agencies deny citizenship to newborn babies based on their parents’ immigration status. Many children born to parents with lawful immigration status, and children whose parents are undocumented, would be deprived of citizenship under the order. The groups swiftly filed a legal challenge against the unconstitutional order last night.

Ahead of the briefing, the ACLU also released a briefing paper “President Trump’s Attack on Birthright Citizenship,” evaluating the executive order.

During the briefing, speakers will provide a legal and political analysis of the order and highlight the groups’ recently filed litigation. At the close, reporters will have an opportunity to ask questions.

WHO:

  • Cody Wofsy, deputy director of the ACLU’s Immigrants’ Rights Project
  • Sarah Mehta, ACLU senior border policy counsel
  • Harold Solis, co-legal director of Make the Road New York
  • Juan Proaño, chief executive officer of LULAC

We're Suing the Trump Administration for Trying to End Birthright Citizenship

Birthright citizenship is the principle that every baby born in the United States is a U.S. citizen. Trump's executive order violates the plain language of the 14th Amendment, puts newborns in harm’s way, and flouts fundamental American values.

We just blocked Trump's birthright citizenship ban.

Within hours of Donald Trump signing an order to end birthright citizenship, we sued. This week, we won arguments to block his illegal order as our case proceeds.
