The ACLU of Maine issued the following response to an event planned at the University of Southern Maine titled Alien Invasion: Fixing the Immigration Crisis:
"The First Amendment protects individuals' right to speak, free from government censorship - even when their views are offensive to most. It does not, however, protect them from being subject to protest and criticism for their views. The best response to an anti-immigrant, xenophobic event like this one is for those who believe in immigrants' rights to show up in droves and take a visible, vocal stand for what they believe in."
