The ACLU of Maine seeks applicants for a full-time, grant-funded 3-year position of Engagement and Education Fellow. This is a hybrid role that has in-office requirements of two (2) days per week.

This position is part of a collective bargaining unit. It is represented by MSEA, SEIU Local 1989.

The Engagement and Education Fellow will support the active and successful operations of ACLU of Maine’s educational and outreach work. The person in this role will help to raise awareness of civil liberties and civil rights issues, history, and importance; mobilize individuals and communities around issues we are working on through our legal and policy departments; and enhance engagement and impact through volunteer programs, community partnerships, and outreach to supporters.

This position is based in Portland, with regular in-state travel as required for outreach activities and events.

• Provide support for trainings, staff events, and educational opportunities to organizations and groups around the state (activities may include book clubs, court watch, workshops, trainings, film screenings, music performances, tabling at fairs and festivals, as well as events and gatherings for specific groups or in specific geographic areas).
• Conduct volunteer trainings and Know Your Rights presentations.
• Help to organize phone banks, rallies, lobby days, and other advocacy activities.
• Manage outreach material procurement and organization.
• Prepare materials and equipment for outreach events.
• Support creation of outreach and educational materials.
• Maintain volunteer management systems and data management processes to keep accurate records of engagement activities. Coordinate tabling program, including conducting volunteer tabling trainings.
• Assist with coordination of volunteer program.

The Engagement and Education Fellow will work under the direct supervision of the Engagement and Education Director and as part of the integrated advocacy team, and will work together with all other ACLU of Maine departments.

The successful candidate is required to have the following:

• Passion for helping share information effectively, and skill in education, communications, or organizing.
• Ability to write and speak persuasively and effectively, especially in public settings.
• A strong understanding of, and demonstrated commitment to, civil liberties and civil rights, including freedom of speech and viewpoint diversity.
• Ability to work cooperatively with ACLU staff and community partners.
• Demonstrated ability to work independently as needed and manage multiple projects with competing deadlines, while maintaining a strong attention to detail.
• Access to a car and willingness to travel throughout the state as needed.
• A commitment to equity that values the individual regardless of race, color, religion, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, age, national origin, marital status, citizenship, disability, veteran status, political identity, or record of arrest or conviction.
• Willingness to work beyond 9-5 as needed, including occasional weekend meetings, presentations, and travel.
• Proficiency with computers: Windows, Microsoft Office, and Excel, in particular.

This is a full-time exempt position and the starting salary is $65,650. The salary is non-negotiable, consistent with the applicable collective bargaining agreement.

Excellent benefits include 20 days paid time off, 10 paid holidays, individual employer-provided health and dental insurance, life insurance, long-term disability, paid family medical leave, and 401(k) plan with employer match of up to 5.5%. Additionally, staff are paid during the following office closures: the first full week in August, the week of Thanksgiving, and from December 24 through January 1.

The ACLU of Maine’s office is based in Portland, Maine. Currently, staff work on a hybrid schedule, with all staff in the office on Tuesday and Wednesday.
