Today, the University of Maine School of Law Student Veterans Association and Women's Law Association will host a panel discussion on women in combat. I will appear on the panel, along with students who served in the military in different capacities. The panel will be moderated by Prof. James Friedman. The event will take place in the Moot Court Room at Maine Law, from 12:05-1:10pm.

In Fall 2012, the ACLU filed suit against the Secretary of Defense on behalf of four servicewomen who served our country in Iraq and Afghanistan--two Marines, an Army soldier, and a pilot who has flown with both the Air Force and the Air National Guard--and on behalf of the Service Women's Action Network, challenging the constitutionality of the DOD's combat exclusion policy, which prevents women from being assigned to most of the units that engage in direct ground conduct. The suit alleges that the exclusion policy violates the right to equal protection because it is a blanket policy that does not take account of either individual abilities or the demands of modern combat.
