A majority of Americans support a new approach to marijuana. Portland can lead the way. It’s time to:

  • Protect families and our community. Marijuana arrests can tear families apart and make it harder for parents to secure housing and jobs.
  • Use our money and policing resources more effectively. Maine spends nearly $9 million each year enforcing marijuana possession laws. That’s money we could be spending to stop serious crimes.
  • Stop funneling people into the criminal justice system. Nearly half of all drug arrests in Maine are for marijuana possession. It’s time to stop filling the system with people who don’t belong there.

Legalizing marijuana use by adults 21 and older in Maine’s largest city is the first step toward shrinking our overcrowded criminal justice system and saving taxpayers billions of dollars in the process.
