Yesterday’s announcement from us and our coalition partners to put marriage on the ballot has garnered local and national press coverage.

Our Executive Director, Shenna Bellows, noted that ACLU support for same-sex marriage rests on the notion that “same-sex marriage is a constitutional right, guaranteed by the religious-freedom and equal-protection amendments” We can both protect religious freedom and give same-sex couples the marriage licenses that grant equal protection under the law.

On the decision to run the campaign Betsy Smith, Executive Director of EqualityMaine, noted that since 2009 “Many Mainers have changed their minds and want a chance to bring equality and fairness to our state. In a similar vein, Shenna noted that, “It’s never too late for justice. It’s never too late to do the right thing. It is time to end discrimination against Maine same-sex couples and their families. ”
