LD 1862 would empower people to call 9-1-1 for help to report an overdose without fear of criminal consequences for taking this lifesaving action. Specifically, LD 1862 would shield all individuals at the site of an overdose from arrest or prosecution for most crimes and for bail condition violations.

The current Good Samaritan law only shields the caller and the person experiencing an overdose from criminal consequences for a handful of offenses. Because of the looming threat of criminal punishment, community members remain fearful of calling 9-1-1 for help if someone is experiencing an overdose.

Strengthening the Good Samaritan law provides one more avenue to prevent overdose deaths and keep people alive.
