This bill establishes the Maine Fair Chance Housing Act, to reduce discrimination in housing based on past criminal convictions. People who have re-entered society following incarceration have the same needs as everyone else, including access to a safe place to live. Ensuring people aren't denied housing solely on the basis of past convictions will help individuals maintain stability and reduce future criminal involvement. It also reduces the harm and collateral consequences felt by children and families when a family member has a past conviction.
