LD 1249 would ban several options for people seeking medication abortion care. Targeting the mail and telemedicine are core components of a nationwide strategy to entirely block abortion access in all 50 states.
Lawmakers are not stopping at their own state borders in their attempt to ban abortion nationwide. LD1249 would target medication abortion care in a number of ways:
- Prohibit medical providers from prescribing medication abortion for their patients by telehealth, telephone, or other digital communications
- Prohibit anyone from sending another person abortion medication
- Create a Class C felony for violating the first or second provisions
- Subject people who violate the first or second provisions to lawsuits for wrongful death or medical malpractice
Abortion is a fundamental right. The ability to decide whether and when to have a child is one of the most important a person has, affecting their education, health and career prospects. The legislature should do everything it can to ensure that pregnant people across the state, no matter where they are, can access this essential health care when they need it.
