Rohini Kurup

Name: Rohini Kurup
Pronouns: She/Her/Hers
Year of Participation: Summer 2019

What was the most valuable thing you learned or accomplished in the program?
As an intern, I had the opportunity to contribute to the ACLU of Maine’s criminal legal system reform initiatives by researching the pretrial process in Maine and elsewhere. This research showed me many critical shortcomings of Maine’s pretrial system and the importance of comprehensive, evidence-based research to develop solutions that tackle these issues. Attending meetings in Augusta with members of a pretrial reform task force the ACLU was part of helped me understand the implications of my research and gave me a window into the policymaking process at the state level.

What have you done since being involved in the ACLU program?
Since interning with the ACLU of Maine, I completed my senior year of college and started work as a research assistant at the Brookings Institution.

What are your plans for the future?
I am interested in attending law school and pursuing a career in the legal and policy fields.
