ACLU of MAINE Blasts Committee Vote Against Limitations on Solitary Confinement


March 4, 2010
Today the Criminal Justice Committee voted 6 to 5 "Ought Not to Pass" to LD 1611, "An Act to Ensure the Humane Treatment of Prisoners in the Special Management Unit."  Three committee members voted to turn the measure into a resolve directing a study of the issue of solitary confinement in the Maine State Prison.  Two committee members, Representative Jim Schatz (D-Blue Hill) and Senator John Nutting (D-Leeds) voted in favor of the bill as amended.

ACLU of MAINE Accedes to Transportation Committee Compromise on Surveillance Cameras

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Today the Maine Legislature's Joint Transportation Committee voted 6 to 2 to 1 in favor of a compromise that would put significant safeguards on the deployment of automated license plate recognition systems (ALPRs).  While the compromise falls short of the total ban sought in the original legislation, it would nonetheless provide important protections against government abuse of power and threats to the right to privacy.
