Yesterday, we filed suit in U.S. District Court with our colleagues at Maine Equal Justice Partners and our fantastic cooperating counsel Jennifer Archer of Kelly Remmel and Zimmerman to challenge the denial of MaineCare coverage to some lawful permanent residents of our state.

This case is about people who have broken no law--people who have played by the rules--but who have had the misfortune to be both ill and poor.  For decades, Maine provided health care coverage to these folks just as it did to citizens, because that is what the Constitution requires.  The Equal Protection clause means that everyone gets equal protection of the law, regardless of race, religion or where you were born.

We have asked the court to reinstate medical coverage for our client, Hans Bruns, who suffers from a painful form of throat cancer, and we have also asked for the court to reinstate coverage for the hundreds of other people who are in a similar situation.
