Anti-Bullying Bill Passes the Legislature

It took two years, two Education Committee votes, two Appropriations Committee votes, and thirteen different votes in the Senate and House, but at approximately 3:00 am this morning, the Maine Legislature passed meaningful legislation to address the growing problem of bullying in our schools.  The ACLU of Maine worked with a number of wonderful organizations--the Maine Women's Lobby, GLAD, EqualityMaine, GLSEN, the Maine Children's Alliance, the Maine Education Association, and many others to help make this legislation possible.

The Day After Election Day

Yesterday, I spent some time getting acquainted with the new office for Mainers United in Portland.  The field team was set up and ready to go. These are the folks that will have their boots on the ground to win marriage for same-sex couples in Maine this November. I was excited to see all of the phones and computers hooked up and ready for use by volunteers who will work hard to change the hearts and minds of voters before election day.

Indefinite Detention... Take Two

On New Year’s Eve 2011, President Obama quietly signed the 2012 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), which codified indefinite military detention without charge or trial into law for the first time in American history. The bill was met with much criticism, specifically from the ACLU, yet despite its passage there is still much left to be decided regarding the new law.

Let Viviette Vote

At 93, Viviette Applewhite is the proud grandmother of five college-educated grandchildren. She has been voting since Kennedy. New voter ID laws in Pennsylvania could prevent her from exercising her fundamental right to vote so the ACLU of Pennsylvania and partners are suing to overturn the law. The plaintiffs are asking the Commonwealth Court to issue an injunction blocking enforcement of the law before November's election. | continue reading

The Fundamental Importance of Humane Treatment - A Basic Right That Serves Us All

I have read too many stories lately about people being brutally mistreated at the hands of those who felt they were justified.  Seventeen year old Treyvon Martin, pursued and shot by a neighborhood watchman for "looking suspicious" while walking home.  Anastasio Hernandez Rojas, beaten, repeatedly tased and killed by more than a dozen Border Patrol agents for the | continue reading

Facing Deportation, Facing Abuse

The ACLU of Maine Foundation filed suit today on behalf of Wilmer Recinos, an undocumented immigrant from El Salvador that suffered a brutal beating at the hands of two guards while being held in the Cumberland County Jail in 2010.

Mr. Recinos experience is sadly representative of our broken immigration detention system

Teaching the Bill of Rights, a Hundred Times and Counting

Last Monday, the ACLU of Maine visited Freeport High School with a team of lawyers and ACLU of Maine staffers to hold an all-day student conference on the Bill of Rights. Four days later, we went to Portland High School to lead a “Know Your Rights” presentation to a criminal justice class. And today and tomorrow we’re in Newport, leading seven different workshops at Nokomis High School about the importance of the Constitution and the relevance it has to young people today. | continue reading
